Animation Instructor Receives Second Annual Faculty Sabbatical Award

Brian Smith won with his proposal that combined animation and industrial design.

Santa Ana, CA, January 02, 2009 --(PR.com)-- For the second year in a row, The Art Institute of California - Orange County has awarded a member of its faculty a quarter-long sabbatical to pursue a passion, add to their body of knowledge and bring the information back to the school. Media Arts & Animation instructor Brian Smith was named the Spring 2009 recipient.

His proposal was titled "The Urban Commuter, An Environmentally Safe Automobile for the Active Family and Its Implications for Teaching in the Area of Industrial Design.”

"The Urban Commuter is a research and development project to create a motor vehicle that meets the needs of the modern family while being environmentally safe," Smith said. "The result of the research will be visually displayed in the form of a 3-D model, clay model and an illustrated file. These will be used as teaching tools in the Industrial Design and Media Arts & Animation programs.

Smith currently guides senior-level students with their portfolios but transportation design has always been his passion. His goal in pursuing this project is to create a cross-disciplinary study between animation and industrial design.

"To have the chance to create an environmentally safe vehicle in a time-free, non-judgmental environment is an immense opportunity," Smith said.

In the spring of 2008, Media Arts & Animation instructor Brad Bradbury used his sabbatical to develop an animated short. He recorded his progress on his blog where students and fellow faculty members were able to make suggestions along the way.

The sabbatical Award Committee is comprised of fellow faculty members who review the proposals without the name associated with the submissions. The anonymity allows the committee to choose a winner solely on the quality of the proposal.
