Life Coach Hueina Su of Beyond Horizon Coaching Reveals Five Master Keys to Achieving New Year's Resolutions

Life Coach Hueina Su of Denville, NJ-based Beyond Horizon Coaching reveals five Master Keys to help people achieve their goals and ensure their success for the New Year.

Denville, NJ, January 03, 2009 --(PR.com)-- New Year's Eve has always been a time for reflections on the year past, and more importantly, about what is coming next for the New Year. It's a time to resolve to make changes or perhaps resolve to have no resolutions.

"According to a study by the University of Scranton, the percentage of Americans who break their New Year’s resolutions by the end of January is 36%," said Hueina Su, keynote speaker, certified life coach, author, and president of Beyond Horizon Coaching based in Denville, New Jersey. “I’m wondering why people keep making the same old New Year’s resolutions that often fail within a month.”

The New Year's resolutions have been dramatized by the media and grossly over-rated. The concept puts so much emphasis and expectation on this one day – New Year’s Day. What’s the problem? "People often have this unrealistic expectation when they make their New Year’s resolutions," Su said. "Either the goals are too big, or they don’t have the right action plan to back it up. As a result, they lose momentum and give up quickly. In a way, they are setting themselves up for failure," Su said. "If you’re ready to make changes, you can start any day of the year – not just the New Year’s day."

Su suggest five Master Keys to help people set the right intentions for the New Year:

1. People should be clear about what they want. Clarity is critical in goal-setting. Make sure the goals are S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-sensitive). Set both long-term and short-term goals with clear deadlines. For example, to lose weight is not a S.M.A.R.T. goal. To lose 20 pounds by end of June is a S.M.A.R.T. goal.

2. Find the big Why. Dig deep on why achieving each goal is important. For example, if the goal is to lose 20 pounds by June, so they can look good, fit into their skinny jeans or have more energy. Then the big Why might be to stay healthy and avoid major diseases in the long run, so they can be there for their family.

3. Have a plan of attack to achieve the goals. "If you don’t plan, you plan to fail," Su said. "Make a master action plan for the goals, and break down the tasks into bite-size action steps. Plug these action steps into the calendar, to make sure you can complete all the tasks to achieve your goals," Su said. "Keep your eyes on the goal, and set the daily intentions to keep taking baby steps."

4. People should hold themselves accountable. Even the greatest plan is useless if they cannot execute it. "Our motivation often ebbs and flows. It’s human nature," Su said. "To sustain your momentum until you reach your goal, you have to be accountable in following your own action plans. It’s often more effective to have someone else hold you accountable," Su said. "A life coach, mentor, workout buddy, and/or friends can hold you accountable, and make sure you keep moving forward."

5. Get support. People should find the resources (people, money, things, etc.) to support them in achieving their goals? When people encounter setbacks, lose motivation, or doubt themselves, it’s extremely important to have a strong support system to keep them focused, supported and motivated.

"If you have tried by yourself before and can’t seem to make things work, it’s time to get professional help," Su said. "A professional life coach is trained to help people achieve their goals. A professional life coach works with people to set the vision and intention, take inspired actions, hold the clients accountable, and keep them on track until they reach their goals."
