Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery: Project Shakthi-II Conducted

The Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery conducted Project Shakthi -II, a free Well Women Checkup Programme, at Rotary Fourrts Medical Centre at Thoraipakkam, on Sunday, 28th December 2008.

Chennai, India, January 05, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Rtn. S.V. Veerramani, Assistant Governor of R.I. District 3230 was the Chief Guest at the function to inaugurate Project Shakthi-II, the free Well Women Checkup Programme of the Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery, at a function held at Rotary Fourrts Medical Centre, Thoraipakkam, at 9-00 a.m. on Sunday, 28th December 2008.

The function was jointly organized by Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery, Rotary Club of Adyar, Rotary Club of Madras Mount and Rotary Club of Chennai Samudra, in association with Rotary Fourrts Medical Centre. Rtn. Dr. R. Sriram, Chairman, Community Services (Health) of the R.I. District presided over the function. Rtn. K.R. Mukundhan, President of Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery, Rtn. T.R. Nandhakumar, President of Rotary Club of Madras Mount, Rtn. Dr. K. Viswakumar, President of Rotary Club of Adyar and Rtn. Anita Ganeshan, President of Rotary Club of Chennai Samudra participated. Rtn. Veerramani and Rtn. Dr. Sriram appreciated the efforts of the participating clubs to make the Event happen. They were particularly appreciative of Rtn. Mukundhan and Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery for taking forward the initiative of the first Project Shakthi to the second location. Rtn. Dr. Sriram announced that the District would soon organize a third such event in view of the grand success of the first Project Shakthi in Pallikaranai in November.

During the programme, a total of 178 women above the age of 30 years predominantly from the lower income group in and around Thoraipakkam were given free comprehensive medical checkup at the Rotary Fourrts Medical Centre. The tests included blood pressure check, diabetes screening and general health checkup. Many women were found anemic and many tested positive for diabetes. The Programme started at 9-00 a.m. and went on upto 2-00 p.m. There was a steady stream of women from the nearby localities from the beginning till the end of the Programme.

The Velachery team led by Rtn. Ramesh Krishnamurthy, Director - Community Services (Health) of Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery, and his counterparts from the other participating clubs, ensured that the programme became a success with a meticulous planning and execution and that only those who were in need of such free checkup attended the camp. Publicity of the event was carried out in the local areas, banners were put up in prominent places and pamphlets were distributed.

Rtn. Dr. T. Sundaresan from Rotary Club of Ashton in Makerfield with Haydock, U.K., along with his wife, and Rtn. Kulkarni from the Rotary Club of Sholapur were distinguished guests at the Event. Rtn. Dr. Sundaresan and his wife showed great interest in the Event. They were extremely impressed by the Programme and even offered their assistance in procuring Anaemia meters required for testing blood.

Most of the Directors of Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery and other participating clubs were present to lend their support to the Programme. The Programme ended with Rtn. S.V. Veerramani distributing mementos to the doctors and the support staff.

“Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery conducted its first Project Shakthi in November this year and the concept has caught on like wildfire and as a consequence we have now held Project Shakthi-II within two months of the initial project. I am extremely proud that this concept, which has been appreciated at the District level, was conceived by the Rotary Club of Chennai Velachery” said Rtn. Ramesh Krishnamurthy. “The success of the first Project Shakthi encouraged our Club to organize a second such Event, benefiting a large number of women from low-income localities in Thoraipakkam. A good support from the media will further encourage our Club to spread the benefit to several other localities in South Chennai” added Rtn. V.
