Kenneth G. Swan, MD, Recognized for “Excellence In Medicine”

Lawrenceville, NJ, January 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Paul J. Hirsch, MD, Chairman of the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Foundation, today announced that Kenneth G. Swan, MD, will receive the Edward J. Ill Physician’s Award®. The award will be presented at the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards® ceremony on May 6, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Princeton.

The Edward J. Ill Physician’s Award® is presented annually to a New Jersey physician who merits recognition for distinguished service as a leader in the medical profession and in the community. Kenneth G. Swan, MD, has been a Professor of Surgery at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark since 1976. A trauma surgeon, Dr. Swan began the Trauma Service at University Hospital, which achieved Level I designation in 1980. At the same time and as Chairman of the New Jersey Committee on Trauma, he implemented the American College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Program in New Jersey and has been Course Director and National Faculty since 1980.

Dr. Swan entered the United States Army Medical Corps (Captain) in 1968 and served three tours as combat surgeon in Vietnam. In 1973, he assumed his current position in New Jersey and transferred to the Active Reserve. Promoted to Colonel in 1977, he commanded the 322nd General Hospital, USAR, Picatinny Arsenal for five years. He returned to Active Duty in 1991 and served as a combat surgeon in Operation Desert Storm. He retired in 1998. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with two Oak Clusters and the Air Medal. Badges he wears designate him a Combat Medic, Master Parachutist, Flight Surgeon, as well as HALO, Air Assault and Special Forces qualified.

-Special Award: Jill A. Lipoti, PhD, for protecting the people of New Jersey from unnecessary exposure to radiation from natural and man-made sources
