Western Washington Student Wins $7,000 Scholar at Sea Scholarship

Washington, DC, January 23, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) has awarded the Spring 2009 Scholar at Sea Scholarship to Alexandra Gawron. The $ 7,000 scholarship will partially cover her participation in the Semester at Sea program, which allows students to visit nearly a dozen countries while studying on a shipboard campus.

Gawron, a Seattle native, is a community health major at Western Washington University. She also volunteers with the Lifestyle Advisor program as a peer health educator for alcohol and drugs.

Partnering with the Semester at Sea program, NSCS presents one scholarship to an outstanding member each semester. The University of Virginia academically sponsors this program and grants credit from more than 70 courses.

"We're happy to help Alexandra participate in a program that'll broaden her perspectives," said Stephen E. Loflin, NSCS' Executive Director. "Her outstanding application and interview earned her the opportunity to learn in a campus as rich in diversity as each port has to offer."

The program has special significance for Gawron-her mother participated in the program as well, nearly 30 years ago.

Gawron is chronicling her shipboard experience on her blog, http://alexandraatsea.blogspot.com/.
