MeetingSource.com Joins Industry Effort to Keep America Meeting and Convening

Meeting Planning Website Offers New Critical Arguments to Save Their Events from Budget Axe - see http://www.meetingsource.com

Providence, RI, February 13, 2009 --(PR.com)-- MeetingSource.com, a leading website for meeting planners and association executives looking for off-site meeting, conference and convention centers, has joined with industry leaders to stem the wave of cancellations in the meetings industry.

“We as an industry really need to reverse the momentum of the dialogue,” said John Horchner, publisher of MeetingSource.com. “We must get out front of the issue and point out the advantages of holding meetings and conventions rather than allowing only critics to stress the disadvantages.”

Since October of 2008, meetings and conventions have come under increased scrutiny and even criticism as budgets tighten due to a souring of the economy. Even President Obama made comments at a news conference yesterday spreading the misconception of executive meetings or incentive trips as “wasteful”.

In response to these and other developments, the industry spearheaded by the U.S. Travel Association, has published a set of guidelines for companies that are getting Government funds. The guidelines provide specific targets to insure that company meetings and employee incentive trips are not wasteful. These guidelines can help all companies, not just those receiving government funds, however. They are available at the U.S. Travel Association’s website - www.ustravel.org.

For its part, MeetingSource.com has interviewed meeting planners across the country and came up with a list of ten arguments for them to keep holding meetings. Recently, it added another article to it meeting planning section with six reasons that face to face events can never be replaced their virtual counter parts – see http://meetingsource.com/meetingplanning.htm.

“We intend to use our influence and give meeting planners the arguments and tools to keep holding their meetings,” Horchner said. “This is no time to beg for business, or ask for handouts, rather we all need to stress all the legitimate reasons for companies to keep holding meetings and conventions.”
