Free Interactive 3D Anatomy Software

Chiang Mai based software firm Next Dimension Imaging has recently published a free 3D anatomy learning application. Within less than two month, the Windows program BoneLab has become popular with educators, students and patients.

Chiang Mai, Thailand, February 19, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The majority of the users are educators and students of medical sciences, healthcare related professionals and those who require an in-depth understanding of human anatomical structures. The integrated 3D model has a high level of detail, suitable to be used at university level.

Students can create their own 3D-views and add name tags and notes in their own language, to better memorize the numerous anatomical terms. 3D views can be quickly recalled and can be exchanged via email with BoneLab users worldwide in order to facilitate team collaboration and distance learning. Educators and doctors use the program to present and explain anatomical content to students and patients. But not only healthcare related professionals showed interest in the program so far. BoneLab is also applied by US prosecutors, whose forensic scientists actively use the program in the training of state attorneys for murder trials.

The vendor, who is backed by years of experience in different three-dimensional medical imaging modalities, expressed its goal to substitute plastics models, anatomical illustrations and drawings, which are still dominating teaching and learning aids, by 3D models and software.

Due to the complex anatomical structures of the human body, high quality 3D anatomy models are the giants among existing models. A model might contain many thousand parts and its surfaces might be represented by many millions of small facets. Despite booming of the graphics industry for many years, mostly industrial CAD and entertainment sectors were the beneficiaries, but the massive anatomy models could not be used directly in the education sector.

While various mainstream CAD visualization solutions are not suitable to teach anatomical content based on 3D models, Next Dimension Imaging had decided to research new techniques for encapsulation, dissection and visualization of massive 3D models. BoneLab's detailed skeleton was contributed by media company 21st Century Solutions/3dSpecial, Spain, a market leader in high end 3D anatomy models.
