Regional shopping destination thecentre:mk has added another piece to its sustainability jigsaw with the purchase four carbon neutral electric vehicles to replace its existing gas powered service road vehicles.

Northampton, United Kingdom, February 26, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The service road vehicles are an integral part of the operation of the centre:mk, transporting waste which is to be recycled around the centre. The work done by these machines is key to the existing recycling initiatives which saw the centre:mk achieving governments recycling targets four years ahead of schedule in 2007-08. The four new vehicles will eventually be charged by a diesel generator which in turn will be powered by Bio-Diesel produced onsite. A Bio-Diesel plant was installed at the end of 2008 and is being run on waste cooking oil from local food retailers.

“the centre:mk is committed to making environmental decisions as part of its ‘business as normal’ procedure,” commented Dan Murphy, Operations Manager for the centre:mk. “The new vehicles means that our plans to use sustainable power wherever possible are one step closer. The Bio-diesel plant was installed last year not only to produce diesel for the security vehicles but any excess was always intended to be used in generators. The fact that the generators can support these vehicles is great news.”

This is the latest enhancement from the centre:mk to reduce its impact on the environment, energy efficient hand dryers, the installation of an onsite composter, the use of grey water and the installation of sun tunnels have all taken place in the past year.
