UC Irvine Extension Receives CEA Accreditation for English Language Program

The University of California, Irvine Extension today announces the receipt of accreditation from the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) for its 10-Week Intensive Program in English as a Second Language.

Irvine, CA, March 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- University’s Program is First Among the UCs to be Awarded Prestigious Distinction.

The University of California, Irvine Extension today announces the receipt of accreditation from the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) for its 10-Week Intensive Program in English as a Second Language. CEA is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a national accrediting agency for English language programs and institutions. The university’s English & Certificates for Internationals (ECI) intensive English program is the first such University of California program to be awarded this honor.

“Receiving this prestigious accreditation illustrates UC Irvine Extension’s commitment to provide programs of the highest standards in education,” shares Gary Matkin, dean of Continuing Education at UC Irvine. “I am so proud of the ECI department for securing this honor. The team put in a tremendous amount of time and effort, much of it volunteer, to bring our English language program the prestige and credit it deserves.”

CEA’s mission is to promote excellence in the field of English language teaching and administration through accreditation of intensive English language programs and institutions worldwide. CEA uses 60 widely-held standards to foster continuous program development through a meticulous process of regular self-assessment and peer evaluation to assess each institution.

UC Irvine Extension began the accreditation process in October of 2006, attending an intensive workshop to preview CEA’s expectations. Over the next two years, ECI faculty and staff provided in-depth documentation of course curriculum, participated in intensive interviews and site inspections with representatives from CEA and provided the organization with a comprehensive overview of the 10-Week Intensive Program in English as a Second Language.

Only 58 other institutions in the U.S. and abroad have achieved CEA’s highly regarded accreditation. Entering this elite group of programs is an intensive process for higher education institutions. The CEA accreditation review team makes arduous demands and deadlines that must be met while simultaneously continuing to offer and improve the flagship ESL program.
