American Comes to Taiwan for Weight Loss Surgery and Cures Diabetes

Driven by the high cost of healthcare in the U.S, an increasing number of Americans look abroad for treatment. Chris W. travelled to Taiwan for weight loss surgery. He did so to cure his type 2 diabetes, and get his hypertension under control, not only to slim down.

Taoyuan City, Taiwan, March 13, 2009 --(PR.com)-- A Californian recently came to Taiwan’s Min-Sheng Hospital for a surgical weight loss procedure that brings remarkable results in curing type 2 diabetes, and returns home full of praise for the service he received.

Weighing over 300 pounds (136 Kg), Christopher W. from Newport Beach California, has had a long history of hypertension, but when diagnosed with type 2 diabetes eighteen months ago, and told that he might eventually lose his sight if he failed to bring his weight under control, Mr. W. decided to act.

After watching a documentary on CBS’ 60 Minutes about a surgical procedure named Gastric Bypass, and how it has been shown to bring an almost instant remission to type 2 diabetes problems, Mr. W. began the process that would eventually bring him to Min-Sheng Hospital in Taiwan.

Mr. W.’s personal physician confirmed that he was a perfect candidate for a gastric bypass ( also sometimes called bariatric surgery), a procedure where a small pouch is created at the top of the stomach then connected to the second section of the small intestine, therefore limiting the amount of food that can be absorbed and digested. This procedure is done laparoscopically using small tubular instruments with a tiny high definition camera attached, which makes it less invasive and enables the patient to leave the hospital within a week with only tiny scars on his tummy.

It costs nearly thirty thousand U.S dollars to have this kind of surgery done in America, and because of his medical history it is impossible for C.W. to find an affordable health insurance to cover him. His income is also too high to qualify him for Medicare, so that he finds himself in the situation of nearly fifty million Americans who go about life without health care insurance, and often can’t afford to pay for treatment when needed.

Mr. W. had heard about International Health care, also sometimes inappropriately called Medical Tourism, and started looking for cheaper alternatives abroad. He focused his research on Asia and discovered that one of Asia’s leading specialists for gastric bypass surgery performs at Min-Sheng Hospital in Taiwan, a country he felt comfortable with, having travelled there on business before.

Contact was made with Min-Sheng Hospital and after a thorough screening and collection of medical data, travel to Taiwan was arranged and surgery scheduled.

Mr. W. arrived in Taiwan on a Monday morning and was admitted at the hospital less than half an hour after leaving the airport since Min-Sheng Hospital is located in Taoyuan, only a short ride from the international airport.
The patient was first put through a series of tests, seen by the surgeon, the anesthesiologist and a cardiologist and cleared for surgery the next day.

About a week later, Chris.W. was discharged from the hospital and full of praise for the professionalism and service he met in Taiwan - said Mr.W. “I received at Min-Sheng Hospital a level of care and service at least as good, if not better, and much more personal than the one in most hospitals in the U.S. Everyone here was very professional and really made me feel comfortable and …special”.

Chris W.is now back in California. He has already lost 44 pounds and his diabetes has been under control without medication since the day he had surgery. Making his Taiwan experience even better, Chris. W. adds “My doctor here (in America) even seems to think that twenty more pounds and my hypertension will also be under control”.
