Steelhenge Consulting Ltd Launches Food Incident Management Programme for the Food Standards Agency with Food Incident Response Workshop

Steelhenge, the UK's leading crisis management and business continuity consultancy, has carried out a food incident response workshop in south west England, launching a three year food incident management programme for the Food Standards Agency.

Salisbury, United Kingdom, March 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Steelhenge has launched a three year programme on food incident management for the Food Standards Agency with a pilot food incident response workshop at the Exchange Conference Centre in Bridgewater. The workshop forms part of the first stage of the food incident management programme in which the FSA is engaging with industry to identify the food incident management issues faced on a local level. The consultation period is designed to ensure the FSA is aware of the kind of help industry and local authorities require from them both before and during a food incident response. This knowledge will feed directly into the development of food incident resilience for the food and drink industry across the UK. The pilot food incident workshop in Bridgewater was attended by representatives from small and medium enterprises in the food and drink industry, along with Trading Standards officers and Environmental Health representatives from local authorities. "Having both groups of representatives was very important, as both experience and manage food incident responses on the front line in complementary roles," explained Isobel Nicholas, Director of Steelhenge. "The attendants welcomed the opportunity to learn about the intricacies of food incident responses, both at a national level and at the local level. Delegates had the chance to really examine the components of food incident response planning, and were delighted to have the opportunity to feedback to the FSA what kind of help they need in order to deal with food incidents promptly and effectively at a local level."

Assessment of risk when there is a suspected food incident, how the company and local authority respond to the food incident and the management of communications with the public are critical components of a food incident response. Initial feedback from the workshop indicates that local businesses and local authority representatives would welcome the opportunity to run through food incident scenarios that incorporate these aspects on a practical level.

"The next stage of the programme is a National Seminar to be held at the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform in Westminster on April 8th, involving companies from all over the UK," Isobel explained. "The seminar will allow representatives of the whole food safety community to identify where the main effort for training and exercising lies and where maximum benefit can be achieved."
