AASHE and the ACUPCC Launch Online Climate Action Planning Wiki

Lexington, KY, April 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) have released Climate Planning for Campuses: A How To Guide (http://www.aashe.org/wiki/climate-planning-guide), a manual to assist colleges and universities in creating climate action plans. It is intended to fill the gap in currently available resources by outlining a how-to approach for each of the various steps required to develop and implement a plan for campus climate leadership.

The 100 plus page report was prepared by Walter Simpson, former Energy Officer at the University at Buffalo, with input from AASHE staff and other experts. Developed with the financial support of the ACUPCC - an initiative through which more than 600 higher education presidents to date have committed their institutions to achieving climate neutrality and integrating climate change into education, research, and outreach - the guide is intended be helpful to all colleges and universities working to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

In an effort to keep it current and relevant, AASHE has published the guide in a "wiki" format that will enable users to edit the text of the guide. "The field of campus climate planning is quite young, and as a result, the best practices are changing quickly," said Toni Nelson, AASHE's Climate Program Manager. "We hope this interactive resource will become a locus for collaborative action and community building by many people committed to reducing college and university GHG emissions." The wiki will be moderated by AASHE to maintain the wiki’s quality and usefulness.

Clean Air-Cool Planet, the National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology program, and Rocky Mountain Institute are serving as “content partners” for the wiki. They provided initial review of the wiki content and will continue to contribute their expertise to its ongoing development.
