Anne Garber Denounces Big Communications Companies for Freebies-with-a-Catch

Consumers warned to use caution when accepting these "free" deals, or be prepared to deal with negative consequences.

Vancouver, Canada, April 10, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Consumer journalist and advocate Anne Garber warns customers of Canadian communications giants to resist so-called "free" expansion of their land-line telephone or high-speed internet access services, saying: "The old cliché holds true, I'm afraid. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is."

Garber -- who is Managing Director of Pacific Northwest-based consumer support site, evalu8.org -- reminds consumers that some of these deals might change the "grandfathered" status of offers already in play from companies that provide internet or telephone services . . . and not in favor of the customer, either. "It seems to me," she says, "as if these companies think they have to 'throw a bone' to the Little Guy, but -- not unexpectedly -- there's usually a catch or something that doesn't work. What really frosts me is that they'll make all kinds of promises to you verbally, but no matter how clever you are about quizzing them about catches in advance, there's always some kind of angle they'll nail you on!"

Garber feels it's time for consumers to start standing up for themselves, and to begin to -- as she puts it -- "vote with your wallets."
