RedVector Fellow Selected to Present at 2009 Civil Engineers’ Summit & Expo

Jim Kissane to Lead Workshop Entitled "Confronting the Challenges of a Shrinking Labor Pool in Engineering."

Tampa, FL, April 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Jim Kissane, a Fellow with RedVector, will lead a workshop at the 2009 Civil Engineers’ Summit & Expo in Los Angeles, CA, April 21-22. The Civil Engineers' Summit is a national two-day learning event bringing together leaders in the civil engineering business.

Kissane, a 20-year industry veteran and a widely-recognized expert in workforce development, will lead a workshop entitled "Confronting the Challenges of a Shrinking Labor Pool in Engineering” in which he will discuss America’s shrinking engineering workforce and how civil engineering firms can better recruit, manage and retain scarce talent. In addition, Kissane will facilitate a discussion among attendees to determine how they can interpret the “generation factor” in their engineering businesses, how they may improve practices in workforce retention and development and discuss how poor employee retention can affect a firm’s financial performance.

“As the global economy increasingly shifts to other parts of the world, the U.S. is no longer the epicenter of engineering,” said Kissane. “We must now compete for the talent that is in demand elsewhere, and the ability to overcome the challenges presented by a shrinking labor pool is more important than ever.”

According to Kissane’s research, the U. S., Japan and China graduated a similar number of engineers twenty years ago. Those countries total graduates ranged from 73,000 to 80,000, while Korean engineering graduates totaled just 28,000. By 2000, however, U. S. engineering graduates declined 20% to 59,500 while Korean engineering graduates increased 140% to 56,500. The U.S. now ranks 8th in the availability of scientists and engineers.
