Lincoln 200, a Bicentennial Birthday Festival in Philadelphia, Educates, Inspires, Commemorates and Entertains

Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday celebration in Philadelphia celebrates Lincoln’s close ties to Philadelphia, including his 1861 inaugural whistle stop tour to Washington DC, and Philadelphia’s pivotal role in preserving the Union in the Civil War.

Philadelphia, PA, April 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Honest Abe will welcome guests of all ages to his 200th birthday celebration, July 2-5, during a festival filled with fun, entertainment, and education for all. The festival begins on Thursday, July 2 with a special birthday party kickoff event.

Visitors will enjoy interactive exhibits, performances, parades, entertainment, living history, storytelling, Lincoln for Kids and a marketplace offering fine arts and crafts, all celebrating the life and legacy of America’s 16th president. Lincoln’s popularity is at its zenith, topping the list of most influential and revered Americans.

Lincoln 200 is Philadelphia’s official celebration of the 16th president’s yearlong birthday commemoration. The festival, located adjacent to the Independence Visitor Center in the heart of Philadelphia’s historic district, will present the region’s finest 19th Century collections, programming and performances, related to the theme, “Lincoln Then and Now.”

“Lincoln 200 will be one, huge birthday party,” says Mary Hagy, Co-Founder. “There’s only one place where people can experience the birthplace of the nation, on the nation’s birthday, celebrating the birthday of the nation’s most popular president. That is Philadelphia, July 2-5, 2009.”

The festival will reveal Lincoln’s close ties to Philadelphia, including the 1861 inaugural whistle stop tour to Washington DC, recently evoked by President Barak Obama’s own train trip to the capitol. Visitors will learn about Philadelphia’s pivotal role in helping preserve the Union in the Civil War, the city’s rich contributions to the Underground Railroad, and the continuing struggle for civil rights. The festival will open a platform for discussion and interpretation of meaningful topics to a wide audience. Visitors will also enjoy the best of Philadelphia 2009, with experiences such as Green-Linc, 21st Century Abe, Lincoln Logs and iLincoln.

According to Co-Founder Dianne Semingson, “Lincoln 200 goes beyond the everyday history books and fully examines, celebrates and showcases his life, work, interests, and influence. This is a festival every American and visitor can relate to.”
