The Maurer Foundation Announces Grant from The Assurant Foundation

Mineola, NY, April 24, 2009 --( The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education has been awarded a grant from The Assurant Foundation to support their Community Breast Health Programs. Through public education, The Maurer Foundation delivers knowledge and hope while empowering women of all ages and life stages to become their own best health advocate.

"The work of The Maurer Foundation to educate the public on this important public health issue is consistent with the focus of the Assurant Foundation," says Lesley Silvester, executive vice president and foundation trustee, Assurant. "We are proud to be a three-year supporter of the innovative outreach efforts of the Maurer Foundation and wish them continued success in helping youth and adults improve their health and wellness."

"The Assurant Foundation is a valued partner and friend, as we share the same commitment to empower through education and awareness" noted Elizabeth Zimmer, executive director of The Maurer Foundation. "Their generous support will enable us to reach even more women and men with the important message of early detection and teaching the risk factors that contribute to the development of this devastating illness.”

Over the course of a forty-five minute program, The Maurer Foundation’s Breast Health Education Programs provide vital information about reducing the risk for breast cancer. In addition, they teach participants the most effective methods of early detection. Their educators are certified and demonstrate how to perform a proper breast self-exam using the most comprehensive technique. By utilizing unique, extremely life-like silicone breast models, participants learn how to feel for embedded pieces which feel very similar to the type of lumps that breast surgeons might consider suspicious. This hands-on learning experience builds essential skills for detecting tumors in their earliest stages.
