Texas Association of Health Underwriters Vigilant in Times of High Number of Uninsured

TAHU Working to Alleviate Pressures for Uninsured Texans.

Duncanville, TX, April 24, 2009 --(PR.com)-- A report released by Families USA, a health consumer organization, on March 26, 2009 stated that around 9.3 million Texans were uninsured during 2007 and 2008. The report went further to say that 7.5 million Texans were uninsured for six months or more during that same time period and about 82.6 percent, were in working families, either working full or part-time.

“The Texas Association of Health Underwriters (TAHU) wants to broadcast the high number of uninsured Texans and work to alleviate that number with legislators,” TAHU president Ron Buffum said, “As a professional organization of independent health insurance agents, we have decided to be more vigilant on following new health care legislation. We will continue to work as strong consumer advocates and hopefully solve this problem.”

TAHU representatives along with the National Association of Health Underwriters recently met with legislators in Washington, DC at the 2009 Annual Capitol Conference to voice concerns of health insurance consumers from across the state.

In 2008, according to Families USA, Texas topped the national average with the largest number of uninsured children totaling 1.4 million. That same year, former President George W. Bush, vetoed legislation that would decrease the number of uninsured children nationwide by 4 million. On February 4, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into legislation the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Program (CHIPRA). CHIPRA will continue to provide about seven million children with health insurance and allow states to help an additional four million more children.

TAHU’s resolve to be part of the solution began last fall and continues through educational courses taught to its members across the state. With the support of the Texas Health & Human Service Commission, TAHU members are learning how they can contribute to reducing the number of uninsured children in the state.
