Spare Some for Autism Second Annual Bowling Challenge Raises $18,000 for Autism Awareness

Foundation Set to Hold its First Kids Golf Challenge in August.

Raleigh, NC, May 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Beth Jarvis, founder of Spare Some for Autism, has announced that the organization raised more than $18,000 at its 2009 Celebrity/CEO Kids Bowling Challenge held in Raleigh earlier this month. The fundraiser took place at AMF Pleasant Valley Lanes. Spare Some for Autism is a non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with Autism.

Local and national Celebrities and CEOs participated in the Bowling Challenge as well as children with autism and their parents. Honorary Chairperson was Jason McElwain, a young man with Autism who made national news in 2006 when he played for four minutes during a high school basketball game and scored twenty points. Before the challenge, Jason made an emotional talk to the 85 kids participating in the event.

“All of the Celebrities and CEOs who participated were just great,” said Beth Jarvis, executive director of Spare Some for Autism. “When Jason spoke, the kids and their parents all wanted to hear more about how he copes with Autism. The event was a total success.”

The 28 Celebrities/CEOs participating included the Carolina Hurricanes’ Glen Wesley, Eric Cole, Patrick Eaves, along with Tripp Tracy and John Forslund. Other celebrities included NC State head football coach Tom O’Brien.

Jarvis also announced the plans for the first Celebrity/CEO Kids Golf Challenge to be held at Raleigh Country Club on August 17. Plans call for an all day tournament that day, with a Swim Clinic conducted by an Olympian swimmer the day before.

“It’s going to be great to add another event to the Spare Some for Autism’s efforts to raise money and awareness,” said Jarvis. “We hope even more Celebrities, CEO’s and sponsors will be able to participate in August.”

Spare Some for Autism raised the $18,000 through live and silent auctions and corporate sponsors. Attendees made bids on live and silent auction items like autographed sports memorabilia, trips and unique experiences.

The proceeds from the Celebrity/CEO Kids Bowling Challenge will benefit the Wake County Public School System’s special-needs area in the form of a grant which will further their work with students who have autism.
