Online Artists Join Record Breaking Collaboration Despite Technical Setbacks

A website launched two weeks ago which aims to create the worlds largest artistic collaboration has recruited over 500 budding artists despite a string of technical setbacks.

New York, NY, August 02, 2006 --(PR.com)-- A website launched two weeks ago which aims to create the worlds largest artistic collaboration has recruited over 500 budding artists despite a string of technical setbacks.

The charity backed One Million Masterpiece project has set itself one year to produce a piece of artwork of epic proportions. Due to be unveiled on World Population Day 2007, the 80 meter wide picture will be made up of one million smaller artworks, all drawn online by contributors from around the world.

The website has developed a cult following despite several technical problems which have held back growth of the project. On the day of launch the website was closed for 5 hours while developers tried to establish why an image of a duck was randomly appearing throughout the website. Two days after launch registration was forced to close after the online donation gateway was overhauled, and on Sunday 18 July the website was offline for an entire day when the Level3 Goswell Road data centre in London overheated.

Organisers remain confident however that the project is on track.

"The artists who've registered so far represent a huge range of people from around the world." Paul Fisher, project founder comments. "We've got landscapes, doodles, political messages, you name it. The great thing is that people are using the website in exactly the right way – they are talking to each other, working with each other, and having fun. This project is going to represent global society in picture form, and that's exactly what's happening."

To join, contributors are being asked to make a $6.50 / £3.50 donation to Oxfam, Save the Children, ActionAid, World Cancer Research Fund or WWF via the website www.theonemillionmasterpiece.com.

Launched on the 15 July 2006, the project is inviting one million people from around the world to become artists and create their own individual piece of art. Each image will be located alongside others from around the world, and together will form one huge unique picture. The result will provide a unique visual snapshot of our world through the eyes of one million people. The final picture will be printed onto a giant canvas and unveiled in London on 11 July 2007, World Population Day, as a symbol of global unity and a celebration of 21st century global culture and society.
