Encore Creativity Expands with First National Affiliate: Laurel Lake in Hudson, Ohio

Hudson, OH, May 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson, Ohio has signed an agreement with Encore Creativity for Older Adults to become the nation’s first Encore affiliate outside the Washington D.C./Baltimore area.

Encore Creativity was established in 2007 to provide an excellent artistic environment for older adults, 55 and over, regardless of experience or ability, who seek performance opportunities under a professional artist. Today, Encore choral and dance programs are offered at multiple locations in the Washington D.C./Baltimore area, including a chorale at the Smithsonian Institution. Encore’s combined chorales (280 singers) have performed concerts at The Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum, and the White House Conference on Aging. Encore has been featured in U.S. News & World Report, CBS Evening News, the Washington Post, and in an Associated Press story carried in 400 national and international newspapers.

This summer, Encore will be conducting its second annual summer "sleepaway" choral camps for older adults at the famed Chautauqua Institution, New York, and at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Encore will also be hosting a Singing at Sea cruise aboard the Queen Mary 2©, cruising from New York City to Southampton, England. These events are open to any interested adult over the age of 55.

Encore is now poised to expand its network of older adult creative arts programs across America. Laurel Lake shares Encore’s mission to provide arts opportunities for adults 55+ from a variety of religious, ethnic and economic backgrounds.

The Laurel Lake Encore Chorale, now in its sixth season, is one of Laurel Lake’s fastest growing wellness programs. The chorale currently has 50 dedicated choristers – ranging in age from 55 to 93 – and is free and open to the general public. The chorale rehearses Tuesdays at 3 p.m. and performs two major concerts – Holiday and Spring – and other special appearances upon request.

As an affiliate, Laurel Lake will continue to develop its choral music program with Encore’s professional guidance, resources and grant writing support as needed. Going forward, Laurel Lake hopes to partner with Encore and local arts organizations to expand arts opportunities for older adults living in the culturally rich Northeast Ohio region.

By the year 2030, it is estimated that 20 percent of America’s population will be 65 or older. The healthiest, best-educated, longest-lived population in the nation's history will have time on their hands and will be seeking new forms of engagement. The health benefits of creative expression for the mind, body and spirit, in the meantime, are being well documented. A recent three-year study, "Creativity and Aging: The Impact of Professionally Conducted Cultural Programs on Older Adults" led by Dr. Gene Cohen of the George Washington University Center of Aging, Health and Humanities, found that older adults reported overall improved health, fewer doctor visits, less medications, fewer falls, less loneliness and higher morale. They also showed reduced risk factors driving the need for long-term care.

The chorales featured in Dr. Cohen’s study formed the nucleus of what is now Encore Creativity for Older Adults.

Now celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Laurel Lake Retirement Community offers a remarkable lifestyle choice for adults who wish to continue leading active lives filled with travel, fitness, volunteer, work, cultural and lifelong learning pursuits. About Encore Creativity for Older Adults
Encore Creativity, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing an excellent and accessible artistic environment for older adults over the age of 55, either beginning, intermediate, or advanced levels, who seek arts education and performance opportunities under a professional artist.

Jeanne Kelly, Executive Director, formerly served as Director of the Levine School of Music, Arlington, Virginia, campus. While there, she formed a chorus consisting of older adults that became part of a study on the impact of professionally conducted cultural programs on older adults. The study was conducted by internationally known gerontologist Dr. Gene Cohen of George Washington University. The three year study showed positive results: better health, fewer doctor visits, less medication usage, more positive responses on mental health measures, and more involvement in overall life activities. The study further concluded that community based arts programs, under professional direction, also reduce risk factors that drive the need for long-term care. The lead sponsor of this study was the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington, D.C.

Encore has choral and dance programs for older adults throughout the Washington D.C./Baltimore metropolitan area and in Hudson, Ohio.
