Oakland PA Childrens Hospital Uses Sydion's eMET Patient Tracking System to Track Patients from Closing Hospital to New Facility

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Utilizes Sydion’s Electronic Patient Tracking System During Historic Patient Relocation to Lawrenceville, PA.

Pittsburgh, PA, May 13, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Children’s Hospital in Oakland, PA officially moved 152 patients to their new campus in Lawrenceville, PA. The move, which took place after two years of strategic planning was executed by a large number of staff to manage, coordinate and transport patients from Oakland, two-and-half miles to the new hospital’s main entrance along Penn Avenue. Sydion, LLC deployed their eMET (Emergency Management Event Tracking) system to track patients in real-time during the relocation.

The patient move began at 7 a.m. and was completed in less than seven hours. It involved a team of more than 275 nurses, physicians, administrators and other staff from Children’s Hospital, as well as Emergency Medical Services personnel. More than 40 ambulances were involved in transporting the patients 2.5 miles from Children’s Hospital’s Oakland facility to the new hospital in Lawrenceville.

Sydion’s electronic patient tracking system gave Children’s Hospital the ability to track patients from their Oakland point of departure to their final destination at Lawrenceville. Staff members used hand-held devices to scan barcodes attached to patients. After each scan, the information was transmitted wirelessly to remote computers located in both Command Centers which then relayed data to Sydion’s Enterprise Servers located in Austin, Texas. “The system performed beautifully,” said Jared Johnson, Managing Director of Sydion, LLC. “After a few minutes of just-in-time training, the users became proficient with the scanners and were able to execute their tasks without impeding patient flow.”

Children’s Hospital Executive Team utilized Sydion’s Enterprise Dashboard to monitor the overall patient reassignment. They were able to see real-time information such as departing location, destination, current location, patient “Track” and elapsed time between scans.

This event was a great example of how Sydion’s eMET system can be utilized to track the relocation of patients during a planned or unplanned event. It also provided all parties with the opportunity to functionally practice the evacuation of one hospital and the surge response at a receiving hospital.
