Year-Long Effort Secures California Regulatory Thumbs-Up

Working on behalf of client engineering firm URS Corporation, EOS Remediation and its west coast Technical Representative, John Sankey, P.Eng. brought the bioremediation product EOSĀ® through unprecedented, custom testing to meet low-salt/low-metal regulatory standards for two California regulators. The result: a hard-to-secure regulatory approval for EOSĀ®, which may be the only bioremediation product yet to meet these demanding state standards.

Raleigh, NC, June 16, 2009 --(PR.com)-- URS Corporation, an environmental engineering firm which had used EOS® on projects throughout the United States approached John Sankey with True Blue Technologies for assistance with securing client and regulatory approval for a specific groundwater project in California. Based on previous experience with EOS®, URS believed the product would produce the longest lasting results at the site with greatest ease of injection. However, the application required meeting strict standards, especially regarding post-treatment salt and metals deposition. True Blue Technologies and EOS Remediation sales and engineering teams partnered to test EOS® against the California regulatory standards, and secured approval for the application earlier this year.

“What makes this story unique is that we waded into a significant testing and regulatory approval effort that most companies would have walked away from,” says John Sankey. “We had worked on a comparable testing and approval process in Florida with EOS Remediation earlier, so we knew we could do it and had a foundation for the testing protocol. Still, we knew it would be a major undertaking.

“It was important to my team and the folks at EOS Remediation that we did all we could to support URS Corporation. We were proud that their experience with EOS® over the years made it their #1 product choice for the project. We were committed to delivering what they needed from a regulatory standpoint.”

True Blue Technologies began working on a dual track – teaming up with URS to design the project and then supporting URS in presentations to the two California regulators with oversight – the Department of Toxic Substances of California and the Central Valley Regional Water Control Board.

With URS, True Blue Technologies met with project engineers to design the project. This involved training with the project team on the EOS® design tool – an application that enables clients to determine the injection strategy, product blend and product quantities. In this phase, True Blue Technologies and URS looked at design parameters for both pilot and full-scale application.

In terms of answering regulatory questions, True Blue Technologies and EOS Remediation established the protocol for a bench test, provided preliminary documentation to the regulators and responded to several requests for additional information. Ultimately, EOS Remediation subcontracted testing elements to an independent laboratory in California. With all the results in, EOS Remediation provided documentation to URS, met directly with the California Department of Toxic Substances and conducted symposiums both at the URS offices and in the field – also attended by the Department.

“We really went above and beyond to bring this together for URS and the regulators,” says Sankey. “It was exciting to receive final regulatory approval, though I never doubted that we would. We were working with the right product for the application, and we took a real partnership approach with our client. I think everyone – including the regulators – were happy that we were able to provide the right solution.”

Sankey says the bottom line is that EOS Remediation now offers a documented product that has met California environmental low-salt/low-metal standards for this type of remediation work.

True Blue Technologies earns customer and employee loyalty by making it easy for clients and staff to achieve their goals.
