Flagstaff Lawyer Earns State Bar’s Ultimate Criminal Defense Honor

Bruce Griffen Recognized for Integrity, Brilliance and Professionalism.

Flagstaff, AZ, June 18, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Bruce S. Griffen, a partner with the firm of Aspey, Watkins & Diesel P.L.L.C. in Flagstaff, has earned an extraordinary honor from his peers for following in the footsteps of a legendary predecessor. The Tom Karas Criminal Justice Award will be presented to Griffen by the State Bar of Arizona during their June 26th annual luncheon at the Arizona Biltmore.

Griffen is a founding/former board member of Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice and a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. A graduate of Northern Arizona University and Pepperdine University School of Law, his practice has encompassed cases from speeding tickets to homicides. In lectures throughout the state, he has spotlighted the principles of criminal defense.

Aspey, Watkins & Diesel partner Frederick M. Aspey nominated Griffen for the Karas Award. “I have known Bruce for most of my life and have practiced law with him for over 30 years. He is widely accepted as the best criminal defense attorney in Northern Arizona.” Aspey believes Griffen epitomizes the specific award criteria, which call for representing clients or the public with integrity, fairness, tenacity, creativity, brilliance and above all professionalism. “Bruce is admired by and respected by judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys throughout the State. His results speak volumes.”

The award is named for Tom Karas (1934-2004), a trial lawyer who demonstrated a rare blend of genius, knowledge, informed skepticism and empathy. During his tenure as the first Federal Public Defender in the nation and President of the State Bar of Arizona, he sought to root out mendacity in the justice system. “I had the honor and pleasure of knowing Tom Karas,” says Aspey, “and I firmly believe that Bruce embodies the criteria for this award. He’s a very fine lawyer.”

Griffen’s experience as a competitive triathlete may illuminate his success in what Karas himself described as an inherently adversarial system: he has thrived in an atmosphere of “tension, turmoil and strife” – with uncommon “courage, confidence, and competence.”
