MUMC Fellowship Trains Physicians in Advanced Information Technology

Savannah, GA, June 26, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) is the first hospital in the nation to offer a leadership and management focused fellowship in health information technology. The new two-year applied informatics fellowship will give physicians specialized training in the use of electronic patient records, integrated medical networks and databases, and the use of the Internet for patient care and research.

“This fellowship will bring resources to MUMC that will improve patient safety, quality of care, and efficiency of delivery. The ultimate goal is to graduate fellows with master’s-level education and training that will allow them to easily attain positions as chief medical information officers around the country in industry, healthcare systems, or academia,” said Robert Pallay, M.D., director of the family medicine residency program at MUMC.

The applied informatics fellowship curriculum will involve information technology, family medicine training, and elements from a Master of Medical Informatics program offered at Northwestern University in Chicago. Funding for the fellowship is provided by MUMC’s information services department, scholarships, and/or grants.

The first fellow accepted to the program is Rajesh Reddy, M.D., is a third-year family medicine resident training at MUMC. Subsequent fellows may be from any accredited post-graduate training program.
