Lighthouse Computer Services and Tech Collective Present IT Scholarship

Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center Student receives $1,000 scholarship to pursue IT education and career path.

Lincoln, RI, June 26, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Lighthouse Computer Services, one of Rhode Island’s fastest growing technology solutions providers, and the Tech Collective, Rhode Island’s Industry Partner for Information Technology and Biosciences, has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Woonsocket Area Career and Technical Center (WACTC) senior, Myles Kalf. Kalf received the scholarship on June 16th at the WACTC’s annual awards night held at Wright’s Farm.

The scholarship was awarded by a selected committee on the criteria that the applying student be a Rhode Island resident affiliated with Military service and entering an IT, MIS or Computer Science field program at a Rhode Island college or university. Kalf’s mother is a retired Captain of the US Army Reserves; Kalf is planning to enter the Game Development and Simulation program at the New England Institute of Technology this fall.

When asked of his interest in IT, Kalf proudly described the computer he recently built from scratch and outfitted with three operating systems. The scholarship is going to make affording college “a lot easier,” he said, noting attending college in the fall would be both he and his brother, Adam – who spun him around in a gripping hug as his name was announced and crowd cheered wildly.

“Lighthouse Computer Services continues to grow as a Rhode Island IT services business, now serving more than 450 customers across the Northeast,” said Lighthouse CEO Tom Mrva. “Sustaining our growth requires access to high caliber IT talent. We feel an obligation to help attract young people to this rewarding profession. The scholarship is one way we can do that. We’re pleased it will be used by such a deserving student – and that we are able to recognize and give back to America’s Armed Forces.”

The scholarship was presented to Kalf by JoAnn Johnson, manager of youth and education programs for the Tech Collective, on behalf of Lighthouse Computer Services, who financed the scholarship, and Tech Collective, who administered it. Johnson reiterated for both organizations the importance of building a strong, viable workforce pipeline for the state’s industries: “It is our goal that this and future scholarship opportunities will work to supplement the rising costs of living and tuition for our students to enter and prosper in Rhode Island’s high-tech and high-wage STEM fields.”
