Espiritu Design Claims Juror’s Award at Design Arts Utah ‘09

Salt Lake City, UT, July 03, 2009 --(PR.com)-- A program of the Utah Arts Council, and part of the Utah Division of Arts and Museums under the state’s Department of Community Culture, Design Arts Utah is dedicated to promoting excellence among the diverse fields of design in Utah with the goal to assist people to see, experience and value the art of design as a part of everyday life.

Design Arts Utah ’09, the seventh annual tribute to design in Utah, was comprised of over 40 entries and narrowed to nine finalists with a single Juror’s Design Award by distinguished juror, Reed Kroloff. Mr. Kroloff is currently Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and also serves an independent design observer, analyst and consultant. A former Dean of Architecture at Tulane University, Mr. Kroloff is also the recipient of the American Academy in Rome’s 2003 Rome Prize Fellowship, has served as Editor-in-Chief of Architecture Magazine and has contributed to numerous architecture and design publications.

The uniqueness of Design Arts Utah is evidenced by Mr. Kroloff’s comment; “The Utah Arts Council Design Arts program is one of only a few nationwide to call attention to design as an important and integral aspect of the arts.”

The Element prosthetic foot features a composite construction primarily of carbon fiber, creating a form consisting of smooth, continual contours with light weight, low profile height and high durability. Key design elements which differentiate the Element Foot System from other prosthetic feet include: an interchangeable “3rd Element”; a customizable carbon fiber spring technology which separates the Element Foot System from traditional dual spring prosthetic foot designs, and the ability to adjust heel stiffness with elastomer based components

The Element’s form consists of smooth, continual contours and minimal visual weight, all of which support the functional attributes to create an elegant design solution exemplary of the “Form Follows Function” modernist paradigm. This result is the direct result of the Human Factors and multidisciplinary team approach to the Element’s development.

According to Juror Reed Kroloff, “Indeed, Espiritu Design’s ‘Element Foot System’ is a particularly elegant product: minimal, beautiful, and functional. It is art not imitating life, but enhancing it.” Mr. Kroloff added, “This is a beautifully simple solution to an exquisitely complicated problem. This is what modern design is supposed to be: elegant and effective, modest and beautiful. This is a really standout project.”

The Design Arts Utah ’09 exhibit, open daily from June 19 through July 30, 2009, is located at the Rio Gallery; 310 South Rio Grande, Salt Lake City.
