Isakson Living Sets the Bar for Continuing Care Retirement Communities

Isakson Living, Atlanta's leading developer of senior retirement housing communities, hosted empathy training for their employees. The programs were designed to simulate various handicaps such as tunnel vision, macular degeneration and paralysis from stroke, and help employees to understand firsthand the difficulties of those with handicaps.

Atlanta, GA, September 25, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Isakson Living, the developer of Park Springs, the southeast's premier Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) in Stone Mountain, Ga. and Peachtree Hills Place, an upscale senior retirement housing community for those 55 and older in Atlanta's Buckhead district, announced today the rescheduled date for its empathy training session for non-clinical employees. The session, which will be held Friday, July 10 at 10 a.m. at Park Springs CCRC, was originally scheduled for June 16.

"Each person will experience the difficulty of doing "normal" every day activities with the limitations that aging or disease commonly impose," said Joan Carlson, Vice President of Quality, Innovation and Culture for Isakson Living. "We will educate throughout the program about disease and how some of our residents are having to cope with handicaps or illnesses beyond their control. This may sound simple, but believe me, no one will forget."

Programs are designed to simulate various handicaps such as tunnel vision, macular degeneration and paralysis from stroke. Daily activities such as eating, walking around and going to meetings will enable employees to understand firsthand the difficulties of those with handicaps. For example, employees might be asked to walk with popcorn in their shoes to reflect someone with severe foot problems. Employees might also be asked to put Vaseline on their glasses to simulate someone with glaucoma.

"I think this will be an eye opening experience for our non-clinical employees," said Andy Isakson, Isakson Living managing partner. "We want our employees to understand the hardships that many of our residents have to go through on a daily basis. The unique insight they will be able to take away from this program will no doubt improve the level of empathetic response our employees will give to our Members."
