Local Libraries Now Provide North Carolinians and Students with Health, Science, and Homework Resources at Their Fingertips

North Carolina libraries have three new online research tools to offer their library patrons, including Consumer Health Complete, Science Reference Center, and TOPICsearch. The three databases aimed at providing health, science, and homework-related information, are provided through NC LIVE (www.nclive.org), North Carolina’s consortium for the state’s nearly 200 public and academic libraries.

Raleigh, NC, July 22, 2009 --(PR.com)-- North Carolina libraries, such as those in the Wake County Public Library system, have three new online research tools to offer their library patrons, including Consumer Health Complete, Science Reference Center, and TOPICsearch. The three databases aimed at providing health, science, and homework-related information, are provided through NC LIVE, North Carolina’s consortium for the state’s nearly 200 public and academic libraries. The research databases are available to all North Carolinians for free online through the websites of local libraries across the state, or through www.nclive.org.

The new services came at no added cost to North Carolina libraries as a result of an agreement between EBSCO Information Services, NC LIVE, and NC WiseOwl, the online information service for public schools administered by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. The added resources include:

• Consumer Health Complete – a database featuring information on health, wellness, and traditional and holistic medicine, on topics including aging, cancer, nutrition, and men’s and women’s health

• Science Reference Center – a full-text resource that supplies students with access to hundreds of science encyclopedias, reference books, and journal articles on topics including biology, chemistry, technology, and wildlife, and provides teachers with articles related to state and national curriculum standards

• TOPICsearch – a current events database that allows researchers to explore popular and controversial issues discussed in today’s classrooms, including more than 60,000 articles from sources, such as international and regional newspapers

"Wake County residents, like those throughout North Carolina can use NC LIVE online to help find answers to all types of questions,” said Dale Cousins, Cameron Village Regional Library Supervisor. “By logging in through the local library's website, one can find answers to help with school assignments, health and consumer information, and facts about events and people in the news. Much of the data, like the Science Reference Center, provides information that is usually available only for a fee from publishers. Perhaps residents have not tapped into NC LIVE because they do not know about the wealth of information available at no cost right at their fingertips--either at home or in the local library. NC LIVE provides a route to discover both new information and to find the answers to old questions, and it's only a ‘click’ away."

North Carolina schools will also benefit from the agreement. NC WiseOwl now provides public and charter schools with a wide variety of online resources, previously only available through NC LIVE member libraries. The new NC WiseOwl EBSCO databases give schools, students, teachers, and parents across the state additional access to critical online resources and research tools available through www.ncwiseowl.org.
