Volunteer Group Gives a Patient a Handcraft Every Hour

The Common Thread Circle, a charity that gives handcrafted comfort items to hospital patients, has expanded production so that they are now giving a patient a handcrafted fabric work for every hour of each day.

Houston, TX, August 04, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Common Thread Circle, a charity that gives handcrafted fabricworks like stuffed bears to hospital patients, has increased production so that every hour of the day, a handcraft goes to a patient in the greater Houston Area.

"With the rise in our production, we are giving almost 1000 items a month, or one for each hour of each day, to patients facing long-term care for serious illness," said Lenore Alfredson, the group's membership coordinator. Alfredson added that the fabricworks come in many forms, some of which are treatment-related like wheelchair catch-all bags and stoma covers, and others of which are "comfort items" for patients.

Starting in 2007, The Common Thread Circle -- a charity sponsored by United Methodist Women and Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, although it is non-denominational -- encouraged its members to devote time to stitching, sewing and knitting handcrafts for Houston-area patients.

"Over the last two years, we have expanded from bringing a few items at a time to a couple hospitals to bringing truckloads of handcrafts to a dozen Houston hospitals," said Rima Blanc, administrator of the group. "These handcrafts provide comfort for patients as they face difficult and often painful procedures, and our blankets keep them warm in the chilled hospital air."

The increased activity has provoked response. Two Houston news stations, Channel 39 KIAH and Fox Channel 26, have featured the group in nightly news stories. In addition, the Texas Medical Center News magazine spotlighted the group with a on the first page of their August issue.
