Millions of Americans Lost in Cornfields: Corn Mazes Affordable for Families During Tough Economy and Help Farmers Survive

Janesville, WI, September 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- While unemployment and a tough economy put a damper on many summer vacations, many farms are looking to give families affordable entertainment this fall with corn mazes while making income to support their farms.

Corn mazes have become popular activities for both consumers and farms since they became popular in the early 1990s. This year more than 1,000 mazes are expected to be open on farms across the country according to Scott Skelly of Corn Mazes America (CMA) based in Wisconsin. Skelly is the owner of one of only a few companies that specialize in making corn mazes for farms.

“A corn maze visit is a great activity for a family on a tight budget,” Skelly said. “It is an activity that all ages can enjoy, it gets the family to spend time outdoors together, and most mazes have other activities available too.”

While not all mazes are design as a picture, most mazes that Skelly designs are also a piece of artwork when viewed from an airplane. “Our mazes this year feature all kinds of designs with themes from farms to local festivals to the 40th anniversary of the moon landing,” Skelly said.

Skelly’s family also runs its own maze and pumpkin farm in Janesville, Wisconsin. Like many farms, they started the farm market to supplement their dairy operation, but now it is their full time business. “Many corn mazes help to support farms that might otherwise be struggling in the down economy.”

Cornfields are not the only place for corn mazes. Skelly will also build a special temporary corn maze in the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago this fall for “Boo! at the Zoo”. In the past his company has also put mazes in Millennium Park in Chicago.

CMA designs and cuts mazes all around the country. Its website, www.cornmazesamerica.com, features hundreds of corn mazes, not just its own to help enthusiasts find a maze near them. Visit CMA’s media information at www.cornmazesamerica.com/media.htm.
