Trendsettaz presents the premiere of Film Night at White Rabbit with a screening of “Vast Wasteland: A Hollywood 187 Film” and a performance by director Derrick B. Harden aka Couture Ink and “Not Waving but Drowning,” directed by Countess Alex Zapak. In “Vast Wasteland: A Hollywood 187 Film,” the director draws from his roots in urban culture and the art world to create this groundbreaking short film. The film was inspired by “Hollywood Murder” the album. The film is Executive Produced by Oli “Power” Grant and Michael Lyons Wier and features Olga Nemcova and Alexi Tavel. “Not Waving but Drowning” is a companion piece to Countess Alex Zapak’s musical, “There’s A Lot of Hate in Your Love” which will premiere during London Fashion Week.
Vast Wasteland: A Hollywood 187 Film
“Vast Wasteland: A Hollywood 187 Film” interweaves a collage of footage into
a cohesive featurette film.
The experimental, non-linear style maintains a sense of continuity. The film illustrates the pointless murder of Hollywood, incorporating a touch of black humor. The director, Derrick B. Harden aka Couture Ink, combines urban culture and art to connect two disparate worlds.
The first part of the film looks at the life of the main character, Couture Ink. The film provides the audience with a glimpse into his public and private personas. At one point he returns to East New York and Brownsville, Brooklyn to reflect on the neighborhoods of his youth.
Couture Ink’s poetry provides a backdrop for the second half of the film about how one can fall victim to the vanity of their own personal Hollywood murder. Harden calls the film, "Vast Wasteland: A Hollywood 187 Film,’ the murder of success.” He explains that “once something happens the idea of it is dead.” He adds, “just making the film is murder.”
The narratives in the film are infused with the same artistic sensibility and talent with which Couture Ink crafts his rhymes. In his debut film, Derrick B. Harden (who hit the college music charts with his hit song “Ghost Town”) draws from his roots in Brownsville, Brooklyn and his foray into the New York art world to form a fresh take on cinema.
The film title is derived from a speech by Newton Minow, former Chairman of the FCC wherein he describes the airwaves as a vast wasteland.
The film is executive produced by Oli “Power” Grant, Founder and Executive Producer of the Wu-Tang Clan and Michael Lyons Wier in Association with Shoestrings and Dreams Productions. Olga Nemcova and Alexi Tavel (jewelry design duo of October Anniversary) co-star in the film. The film also features “Reception” an art installation by artist Vadis Turner. Not Waving but Drowning
My idea for the film “Not Waving but Drowning” was to illustrate the characters and themes in my musical, “There's A Lot of Hate in Your Love” and I was becoming vaguely aware of another authority half-formed..phantoms crowding from a virus I had endured, chickenpox, falling asleep on feverish afternoons to the beat of classic movies. Marilyn and Clark Gable, Henry Fonda making me hyperactive, jerky and half out of my mind with too much psychic furniture..a head pregnant with horses and heroes, natives and aliens, cowboys and indians dancing to the rhythm of the television drum.
In my story, the character is obsessed with the film “The Misfits,” Westerns, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. These women represent the ultimate “object of desire,” the princess that every little girl wants to grow up to be, reflected in the adult bedtime stories of movies our “mythic mirror” and the embodiment of ultimate dolls the “infinite barbies” of our cultural stories. The film runs 6 minutes.
