Nu Yale Cleaners Receives Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence

Indianaoplis, IN, September 23, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Jeffersonville-based Nu-Yale Cleaners has received a 2009 Indiana Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence during the annual Pollution Prevention Conference and Trade Show held Sept. 16 at Primo's West in Plainfield. Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Assistant Commissioner Rick Bossingham presented the award to owner Gary Maloney.

Nu Yale Cleaners installed the Solvair dry cleaning machine, replacing the use of a federally-regulated substance, perchlorethylene, with an environmentally friendly cleaning liquid that does not pollute the water and air. Liquids and supplies may be recycled and reused, and process wastes are managed with a system that eliminates emissions and ensures reclamation of recyclable materials.

The Solvair process has reduced hazardous waste by 2,071 pounds per year and waste water by 3,465 pounds per year. The Solvair removes a wider range of stains from garments, leaves no odors, and uses no heat to dry clothes. Quality is increased while waste, utility costs, and health and environmental impacts are reduced.

"All of us at Nu-Yale Cleaners are excited and extremely honored to receive the Governor's Environmental Excellence Award," Maloney said. "Our innovative cleaning technology is the first in Indiana and only the ninth in the world to be able to offer this truly green technology. For the first time, the consumer gets an even cleaner product using an environmentally safe process. Nu-Yale remains committed to exploring the cutting edge of technology and being the leader in the dry cleaning industry."

Assistant Commissioner Bossingham congratulated the company on receiving the award. "When voluntary business actions result in improved operational practices, there will be a winning outcome every time. Gary Maloney and Nu-Yale cleaners are to be commended for their innovation and their achievements for engaging in environmentally-friendly business operations," he said.

An annual award program that began in 1994, the Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence recognize Indiana's leaders who have identified and implemented innovative environmental practices into their programs and facilities. The awards program is open to all Indiana facilities, state and local units of government, individuals, and technical assistance organizations that implement exemplary environmental projects with measurable results. A review committee consisting of representatives from industry, environmental organizations, education, and government evaluate each Governor's Awards application, considering how each project reflects and advances environmental excellence, economic prosperity, and leadership commitment to these improvements.

By seeking out and utilizing innovative environmental practices, these facilities and programs have reduced waste, saved money and contributed greatly to Indiana's environmental protection efforts, benefiting the health and welfare of the state's communities. Other 2009 award winners are:

Energy category: Benton County Wind Farm, LLC; Toyota Industrial Equipment Mfg., Inc., Columbus.
Five Years Continuous Improvement category; DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., Warsaw; and,
Pollution Prevention category: National Office Furniture, Jasper; and, Church Brothers, Indianapolis.
