UOC - Open University of Catalonia - the Global Online University’s New Academic Year Begins with 38,000 Students and New Look Virtual Campus

UOC - Open University of Catalonia - The Global Online University starts new semester with 38,904 students.

Barcelona, Spain, September 24, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Coinciding with the University's fifteenth anniversary, the UOC - Open University of Catalonia - The Global Online University starts this new semester with 38,094 students enrolled on one of its first- and second-cycle qualifications, degrees or university masters. For more than 9,000 students, it is the first time they have studied on the UOC's Virtual Campus, which debuts a new look.

Of the total number of students, 83.4% (31,777) have enrolled on one of the programmes on the Catalan campus, while the remaining 16.6% (6,317) have enrolled on one of the courses on the Spanish campus.

Over 7,000 students study EHEA-adapted courses
A total of 7,129 students are to start on one of the courses adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). To be precise, 5,823 students have enrolled on one of the ten degree qualifications (Business Administration and Management, Communication, Social Education, Information and Documentation, Marketing and Market Research, Psychology, Tourism, Law, Humanities, and Catalan Language and Literature) and 1,306 students on one of the four university master’s degrees (Education and ICT (e-learning), Cultural Management, Health and Safety, Free Software, and the Information and Knowledge Society).

Psychology and Business Administration and Management, the most popular
The most popular qualifications are Psychology, and Business Administration and Management, followed by the diploma in Business Sciences in Catalan and the Law degree in Spanish.

1,283 students on the University @thenaeum
This semester, 1,283 students are to start their studies on the 12th University @thenaeum, the UOC’s training offer that is open to everyone and without entry requirements. This year, there are 351 subjects on offer.

Languages and mathematics, the most popular subjects
The subjects for the various levels of French and English, Introduction to Business Mathematics and Introduction to Engineering Mathematics have been the most sought after subjects.

Campus 5.0
One of the new developments for this academic year is the launch of the UOC’s Campus 5.0 for the whole university community. This is the UOC’s new virtual campus, designed by the Office of Learning Technologies to provide a more pleasant learning experience.

The main innovation comes in the form of the numerous options for customisation and configuration. Thus, students, faculty and management staff can tailor the campus to meet their needs. Another benefit is that the architecture can incorporate modules from learning platforms such as Moodle or Sakai and applications such as Gmail or Facebook.

Likewise, it is accessible from any device with an internet connection: mobile telephones, PDAs, ebooks, etc.
