Dynaflow Demonstrates New Gas-Liquid Separation Technology on NASA Zero Gravity Research Flight

Jessup, MD, October 07, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Dynaflow, Inc.®, a leader in research and development services and products in fluid dynamics, today announced the successful trial of their DynaSwirl® gas – liquid separator on a NASA Microgravity Research Flight. The flight experiments also involved use of a DynaSwirl® bubble generator and a Dynaflow ABS Acoustic Bubble Spectrometer®.

As part of the NASA Facilitated Access to the Space Environment for Technology Development and Training Program, called FAST, two Dynaflow research scientists conducted the zero gravity demonstration of the DynaSwirl® gas – liquid separator on a modified Boeing 727 flight. The flight underwent parabolic maneuvers which provided the environment of zero gravity. The goal of the demonstration was to further the DynaSwirl®’s technological readiness for possible inclusion as part of a future NASA space mission system.

Gas–liquid separation is a key aspect of space flight life support systems, thermal control systems, and power conversion systems. Limitations on the amount of liquids that can be carried to space makes it important to recycle them. NASA is looking for enhanced and improved approaches to gas–liquid separation technologies and Dynaflow’s DynaSwirl® utilizes the concepts of rotational flows, vortex generation, and cavitation to separate gas and liquids in the absence of gravity. DynaSwirl® technical development has profited from extensive cavitation research conducted by Dynaflow for the US Office of Naval Research.

Dynaflow senior research scientist, Dr. Xiongjun Wu said “We are pleased with the successful demonstration of the DynaSwirl® separator in a zero gravity environment. The demonstration provided us with data in absence of gravity and insights that we will use in enhancing the DynaSwirl’s technological readiness.”

Dynaflow research scientist Dr. Richa Mann added “The flight gives us some further information for improving the DynaSwirl® separator and for planning applications where it can most contribute to NASA space flight
success.”

The inflight demonstration was part of an ongoing NASA funded project at Dynaflow for the development of the gas–liquid separator. Dynaflow President, Dr. Georges Chahine, said “We are very thankful and appreciative of NASA’s support and the opportunity to contribute to their success by adapting our earth based research and products to the space environment.”
