Chamber Recognized for Energy Saving Efforts

The Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce has been honored by Efficiency Maine for its part in promoting and encouraging County businesses to adopt energy efficient practices and equipment.

Auburn, ME, October 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- The Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce has been honored for its part in promoting and encouraging County businesses to adopt energy efficient practices and equipment.

At its October general meeting held in Auburn today, the Chamber received a Certificate of Recognition from Efficiency Maine, a program of the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC).

Presenting the award, Efficiency Maine Director of Energy Programs John Brautigam, said since June 2003, Efficiency Maine has completed 308 energy saving projects in Androscoggin County and had provided more than $2 million in incentives for these projects.

“These projects have realized electricity usage savings of over seventeen million kilowatt hours and prevented the emission of over eight and a half tons of CO2 into the atmosphere,” he said.

“But Efficiency Maine’s successes would not be possible without supporters such as The Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce. They have helped us spread the news about what we do as an organization and the general benefits of energy efficiency and energy conservation.”

Brautigam said overall Efficiency Maine’s Business Program has assisted 690 Maine businesses, with the help of 588 approved Qualified Partners, completing 938 energy efficiency projects.

These have generated annualized savings of 34,115 MWh and realized total economic benefits of $54.3 million in avoided electrical costs.

"But just as important as the savings to the Maine economy, have been the benefits to the environment. Since it was established in 2002, Efficiency Maine’s programs have averted the emission of more than 1.6 million tons of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere. That’s equivalent to taking more than 39,000 cars off the road for a decade,” said Brautigam.

Efficiency Maine is a statewide effort to promote the more efficient use of electricity, help Maine residents and businesses reduce energy costs, and improve Maine's environment.

It does this by making available financial incentives and education and marketing programs that reach a wide ranging demographic - school students to business owners to home owners.
