MUMC Rated Savannah’s Top Hospital

Savannah, GA, October 15, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) is Savannah’s top-rated hospital, and is among the top 10 hospitals in Georgia for cardiac care, vascular surgery, spine surgery, stroke care, pulmonary care, critical care, and gastrointestinal care. The results are based on an annual study released by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization.

The Twelfth Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study analyzed approximately 40 million Medicare discharges from every U.S. hospital from 2006 through 2008. After looking at patient outcomes, mortality rates, and complication rates, HealthGrades assigned 1 star (poor), 3 stars (as expected), or 5 stars (best) to hospitals in 28 categories, from heart failure to hip replacement to pneumonia.

The study also rated MUMC among the top 10 percent nationally for pulmonary and gastrointestinal medical services. In addition, MUMC achieved 5 stars for the treatment of heart failure, stroke, pneumonia, sepsis, respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleed, spinal fusion surgery, and peripheral vascular bypass surgery.

“We have always been committed to providing the highest level of care. That’s what our patients expect and deserve. We’re proud of this recognition and will continue to bring the very best services to our community,” said Phillip Schaengold, J.D., MBA, president and CEO of Memorial Health.

According to the study, top-rated hospitals had a 52 percent lower mortality rate than the U.S. national average when looking at patient outcomes in17 procedures.
