Expert in learning interaction and Research Fellow at the UOC's IN3 research institute, Jakko van der Pol, offered a research seminar entitled Facilitating Online Learning Conversations. Barcelona, Spain, October 17, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has long since aspired to achieve deep, active and meaningful learning processes. The open nature of communicative media seems to offer good possibilities to support learners’ collaborative knowledge construction. Online discussion tools, in particular, hold a great potential for facilitating reflection, and deep processing and appropriation of the subject matter. We will see, however, that this potential is far from easy to realise and that online discussion has both benefits and constraints.

Van der Pol is to make reference to the differences between conversation online and face to face, and the additional demands in implementing ‘conversation for learning’ when compared to conversation in everyday life. He is to present research into the benefits of a specialised annotation tool which aims to overcome some of the constraints involved, and will share some theoretical interpretations and implications deriving from the results.
