The UOC - Open University of Catalonia - the Global Online University - Research Seminar on Interaction Between Technology and Society

The researcher from the University of Oslo's Computer Engineering Department Irene Olaussen and UOC IN3 research institute visiting professors Israel Rodríguez and Daniel López are to offer a research seminar entitled Tracing Transitions: an ANT (Actor-Network Theory) Approach to the Study of Political Practice. The seminar is to take place on 21 and 22 October at the IN3 building (Av. del Canal s/n, Castelldefels).

Barcelona, Spain, October 21, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Traditionally, the study of people, things and the material environment have been divided into different disciplines. While technical progress has been led by computer engineers, sociologists have studied the identities, interests and interactions developing from use of these new information and communication technologies (ICTs). The aim of this seminar is to go beyond disciplinary boundaries and use new resources for analysis to study the complex interaction between technology and society. The speakers will explain actor-network theory and analyse how these concepts can help in studying the transitions between political objectives, technological devices and social identities.

Policies involving the new ICTs are often loaded with visions of the transformative potential of technology in society. The idea of technology as a catalyst for more functional, efficient and empowering human affairs is inherent in concepts such as e-health, e-learning and e-administration. The speakers will analyse the problems set by the enabling role of technology and focus on the process to put these policies into practice. Likewise, they will also question the role of technology as part of political practice.
