Local Recycling Firm Invests in the Most Automated Recycling Equipment

TFC Recycling installs multi-million dollar recycling system.

Chesapeake, VA, September 27, 2006 --(PR.com)-- TFC Recycling has just completed installation of an $11 million dollar system to sort paper, bottles and cans collected from residential and commercial recycling programs throughout Hampton Roads. The recycling system, dubbed the “Green Team Recycling Machine (GTRM)” is the most automated and expensive sorting system of its type in the United States. The GTRM will process over 40 tons per hour and includes the most state-of-the-art optical sorting technology. This technology includes cameras perched over conveyor belts that detect various recyclable materials and engage air jets to blow, separating out the recyclable materials from each other. Recyclables are then baled and shipped to various mills throughout the world where they are made into new products that we reuse and recycle everyday.

Vice President and Owner of TFC Recycling, Michael Benedetto explains, “The benefits to our local community are tremendous. First, recycling is the right thing to do. This equipment makes recycling an even more efficiently and effective choice versus traditional waste disposal. Second, most of us participate in recycling at home – recycling paper, bottles and cans. But at schools, public buildings and other businesses, the same materials often could not be recycled. Now, we can offer the same types of recycling services. This helps these groups save money through recycling and helps companies “go green.” Finally and perhaps most importantly, this investment back into our community will increase jobs, tax revenue and keep business locally.”

TFC Recycling has been locally owned and operated since 1973, employs over 325 people and operates over 125 vehicles. The company will arrange tours for interested parties after testing is complete.

TFC Recycling currently provides residential recycling services for the Cities of Virginia Beach and Newport News, and the Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) and the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA). In addition, TFC also provides waste removal services throughout Hampton Roads, offering businesses a single choice for their recycling and disposal needs.

About TFC Recycling
In 1897 the Benedetto family began collecting rags, newspaper, and trash in New York City with a pushcart. Three generations later, Joseph A Benedetto, Jr. decided to leave the family business and formed TFC Recycling in 1973 in Chesapeake, Virginia. With minimal capital investment and only a handful of employees, TFC set out to establish itself as a leader in the recycling and solid waste industry.

Today, TFC uses cutting edge technology to process the recyclable materials it collects and receives from businesses and residents throughout Virginia and North Carolina. TFC pioneered the first automated Material Recovery Facility (MRF) on the United States East Coast and continues to revolutionize the recycling industry through its use of single stream technology. Single stream technology allows for ease of recycling collection and processing, which encourages high resident participation and reduces the resident's overall waste disposal stream.
