Do You Think Pink 365 or Just 31?

Women battling breast cancer need your help year round not just in the month of October.

Fairfax, VA, November 09, 2009 --(PR.com)-- Every three minutes somebody’s best friend is diagnosed with breast cancer. Many of these women will become financially devastated because of their illness. They will accumulate bills each and every day that need to be paid each and every month, not just in October. Their lives and those of their families will be forever changed through no fault of their own.

The cost of breast cancer treatment and follow up care over a women’s lifetime can run between $50,000 to over $75,000 depending on the type of treatment necessary. According to a Kaiser Foundation / Harvard School of Public Health Study, 33% of cancer patients have trouble paying their medical bills while 43% skip treatment or do not fill prescriptions due to cost. One out of five patients with health insurance will use all or most of their savings during the course of treatment. The outlook for uninsured and underinsured patients is much grimmer.

The average family budget doesn’t begin to cover the cost of breast cancer. Even in best case scenarios, insured women with a 10 or 20% co pay can expect to pay out expenses on average $10,000 to $15,000. In worse case scenarios, women who are uninsured or underinsured can become financially ruined to fight their disease. Many families struggle to cover basic living expenses such as mortgages, utilities and food while at the same time must endure the many changes it brings to their lives.

“Families shouldn’t have to make choices between fighting for mom’s life or keeping a roof over their head and food on the table” says Kathy McEvoy, breast cancer survivor and Founder of Celebrate In Pink. While research is essential to finding a cure for breast cancer, we can’t overlook the heroes fighting for their lives everyday who need financial assistance. Supporting the cause throughout the year is critical to reaching this goal. This can be done by purchasing products that support breast cancer or by making donations directly to related organizations. Look for ways you can Pink 365.
