Skin Care Diversity: Consumers and Ethnic-Specific Skincare Products

Skincare News Magazine highlights the success of ethnic-specific skin care.

Sacramento, CA, October 03, 2006 --(PR.com)-- It has only been in the past few years that the public has seen ethnic-specific skin care and beauty products developed and marketed for African-Americans and other ethnicities. But now those numbers are booming for the hair, beauty and cosmetic industry, or “HBC” as it is sometimes referred to. Skincare-News.com’s latest article, “Skin Care & Ethnic Beauty Spelled in 3 Letters: HBC”, spotlights how far ethnic-specific skincare has come.                                                http://www.skincare-news.com/articles.php?ArtID=166

In the article, the definition of “ethnic” is given, educating readers on just how important it is that these groups have skincare products that accommodate their specific needs and wants when it comes to beauty and skin care.

To be formal about it, Dictionary.reference.com lists the term “ethnic” as follows: “pertaining to or characteristic of a people, esp. a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like”. And with this comes the idea that, in a skincare and beauty related sense, not all people are created equal.

To show justification of how the ethnic-specific beauty, skin care and cosmetic industry is starting to wake up and smell the coffee is explained through simple but very eye-opening numbers:

Hair, beauty, cosmetics and skin care have come a long way in the past decade, when supermodels such as Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell were limited to only one shade of foundation. The cosmetic and skin care industry at the time had no idea of the profits they could be making by developing and selling skincare products for every shade of skin-- from African Americans to Hispanics and Asians. That attitude has dramatically changed, as ethnic-specific hair, beauty and cosmetics (referred to as “HBC”) is climbing to a whooping $1.9 billion in 2006, according to Marketresearch.com. And the number for ethnic-specific skincare alone is foreseen to reach $238 million by 2012!

The article then mentions the number of skincare challenges that face African-Americans when it comes to skin care, including acne, ingrown hairs and keloids, to name a few. “Skin Care & Ethnic Beauty Spelled in 3 Letter: HBC” explains why it is necessary to point out these ethnic-specific skincare problems:

Because of the number of differences in skin tone, complexion and physical characteristics of different ethnic groups, it was only a matter of time before the beauty and skin care industry realized that they could better serve these communities as well as make a substantial profit. But being able to develop a diverse range of beauty and skin care products for a specific group has never been an easy task.

Skin care expert Dania Mallette said she couldn’t believe the numbers when she came across them while doing research for the article. “It’s one thing to see ethnic-specific stores making good business catering to African-Americans, Hispanics or Asians in your own neighborhood, but to see those numbers in market research and to know that those numbers were representing the number of consumers in America purchasing these products, that really put everything into perspective for me.”
