Save Your Hair: the Real Truth on Synthetic Products

Most mainstream hair products that are marketed to Black American women have a negative effect on ethnic hair. The truths about petroleum based products are examined while the benefits of natural hair care products are explored.

Chicago, IL, November 11, 2009 --(PR.com)-- You may not know it, but most hair products that are marketed to Black American women are not good for your hair. This is because most of these products are made with petroleum, also known as petroleum jelly, soft paraffin, white paraffin, and even mineral oil. Ironically, because it’s a main ingredient in most black hair products, we think it has to be good for our hair, right? Nope. The truth is - petroleum is used in most of these products because it gives our hair an artificial shine and it’s an inexpensive ingredient, which explains why the prices are lower in comparison to those made with natural oils.

Petroleum based products smother the strands and the pores of the scalp, reducing hair growth and making hair much more prone to damage and breakage. On the other hand, hair care products derived from plants and herb extracts can improve the blood circulation in the scalp and stimulate hair growth. These products contain ingredients such as jojoba and olive oil.

Many hair professionals, especially those specializing in natural hair, are becoming more and more aware of the benefits of natural hair care products. Darya Johnson, a Chicago based hair stylist who strives to live green, understands the dangers of chemicals in general, but especially to the hair and scalp.

“Artificial hair care products are not devoid of chemicals which have harmful side effects,” said Johnson. “Even though chemically free hair care products are normally priced higher, it’s my choice because of the superb results. I believe chemically free products should cost more because of the quality of the ingredients.”

Understanding the unique needs of ethnic hair, Johnson searched for products that locked-in the moisture and prevented damage from styling. She found products she likes, but had to mix them with one or two others to get the results she wanted. Noticing a need, she researched ingredients in order to create products that would provide the exact results she was seeking.

“When I developed the Darya’s Natural Hair line my goal was to create products that assist in health and beauty of my clients’ hair. They might cost more [than the non-natural hair care products] but not really because my products have better efficiency,” said Johnson. “My customers are always surprised at how little they have to use to achieve their desired style.”

Johnson’s product line currently consists of three products - Shine Spray, Dry Itchy Scalp Oil, and Alcohol Free Locking & Twisting Gel w/Olive Oil. Five more products are scheduled to launch soon which include a cleansing shampoo, a dry shampoo, a moisturizing shampoo, a moisturizing conditioner, and a curly cream. She is dedicated to providing high quality products for the hair that contain essential natural ingredients.

In addition, Johnson has perfected her hair craft during an award winning career spanning over 10 years. Her clients include Bonnie DeShong, Lorenz Tate, Kendall Gill, Craig Hodges, and Charles Oakley. She has also created a DVD entitled “Lock & Twist Maintenance”, the first in a ‘How To” series for natural hair care techniques.
