Partnership Between Educational Publisher and North Carolina District

Portland, ME, November 12, 2009 --(PR.com)-- At the recent annual conference of the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (www.ncctm.org), educational publisher Walch Education unveiled the first installment of its partnership with North Carolina educators: Foundations of Algebra. The program is designed for students who are challenged by the 8th-grade mathematics EOG.

Foundations of Algebra was developed through a collaboration with the Special Education and Curriculum and Instruction departments in Wake County. It is now available to their teachers and to others around the state.

“These materials were developed and refined in the classroom,” says Walch Education’s Senior Director of Programs and Partnerships, Jill Rosenblum. “No one understands better than educators in schools and district offices how certain students struggle with mathematics. We’ve benefited from the work that Valerie Ness Faulkner and Sonia Dupree, among others, have done in Wake County. Our partnership has produced a program that has enormous benefits for 9th grade students throughout the state.”

Foundations of Algebra is a semester-long or full-year course that develops real conceptual understanding of mathematics. Through a carefully structured sequence of activities, students move from concrete experiences to sense-making discussions, and finally to the conventions of symbolic representation, resulting in a true understanding of numbers as a system.

The program comes packaged in an easy-to-use, easy-to-adapt 3-ring binder with a CD-ROM containing the entire program on a searchable PDF. Foundations of Algebra is closely aligned with the North Carolina Mathematics Standard Course of Study and employs a variety of research-based programs including the Marilyn Burns Fraction Kit and Henry Borenson's Hands-on-Equations.

Foundations of Algebra is a seven-unit program that will be available as a complete course in the summer of 2010. To pre-order or for more information, see Foundations of Algebra, or contact Walch Education at customerservice@walch.com, 800-341-6094
