Speedee Mart has carried Xenergy Premium, the official energy drink of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), since the brand made its debut in 2006, and was quick to stock Xenergy Xtreme when the product was introduced earlier this year. Paul Orluske, Speedee Mart’s vice president of operations, identified a void in the energy drink niche about the time Xenergy was introduced. “Based on trends in other segments of the beverage market, the category needed a sugar- and calorie-free option,” Orluske explains. “Look at the strength of Diet Coke, for example. There was an existing consumer base, but we needed a strong leader to assume that role in energy drinks.”

Orluske reports that Xenergy is also attracting more new energy drink users than other leading brands. “We see a lot of adults, women, business people going to work or mid-work day, picking up a Xenergy.” This, according to Orluske, is a big opportunity for energy drink retailers. “We’re able to reach out to new customers. They see Xenergy as a premium brand, yet we can offer XYIENCE as a two-for-$3, so it’s also a great value.”

Another plus for the retailer is XYIENCE’s affiliation with the Las Vegas-based UFC. “I’m a longtime boxing fan so I started watching the UFC in its early days. Monitoring the growth of mixed martial arts, I felt confident that the sport was well-positioned for a surge in popularity, which has happened,” Orluske explains. “When XYIENCE teamed up with the UFC as its official energy drink sponsor, it was an enormous opportunity for the brand and the retailers that carry Xenergy,” he says.
