)-- Risk management is an ever growing concern in most organizations. Storage environments in particular have to manage obsolete technologies in addition to ensuring support for proprietary systems. As UDO (Ultra Density Optical) has reached its 18th hole, more environments have begun to weigh the risks of proprietary technology. This has led to a wide adoption of Blu Ray as the optical storage standard. Due to the wide global support, low cost of entry, multi platform compatibility, and industry standard UDF compatibility of Blu Ray, migration rates from UDO has been ever increasing.
Migration however is a seamless process. In addition to supporting migration from slow, aging IBM 3995 and 3996 Optical Libraries, the actual migration can be scheduled for off-peak hours or run continuously in the background to ensure no disruption of daily business activities.
The 3996 and 3995 Optical Library are usually attached to the IBM System i platform using i5/OS. The 3996 features the 5.25 inch optical technology 30GB Ultra Density Optical (UDO™) drives and media. The IBM 3996 optical libraries replaced the IBM 3995 optical library, and provide up to 5.2 terabytes of archive storage.
Data Migration is the process of reading data from the IBM 3996 or IBM 3995 optical jukebox, and then writing it to a standard Blu Ray optical library. Data Migration is the only option when migrating away from the now defunct technology.
Important to note is that the IBM 3995 and IBM 3996 are not compatible with each other. Furthermore, physical form factor and media platters for both machines are not compatible either. This increases the risk of proprietary format sprawl.
There are two data migration options to consider when moving your data from the 3996 or 3995 UDO optical library to a standard Blu ray library. In both scenarios, the migration tool comes standard with every Blu Ray library Appliance;
1. Use utilities and procedures associated with your archive software application to migrate the data. This includes using utilities provided by the primary archive application or services/utilities that may be provided by third parties. So long as your application recognizes CIFS, NFS or http mount points, this should take a few minutes.
2. Copy the data from media in a direct attached IBM 3996 or IBM 3995 optical library to Blu ray media in a standard Blu ray library. This option may be useful if you want to move the data to the new optical library as quickly as possible so that the older IBM 3996 or IBM 3995 optical library and host adapter can be removed.
Again, in both scenarios, the migration tool comes standard with every Blu Ray library Appliance.
This allows customers migrate from defunct 3996 or 3995 MO and UDO optical libraries, eliminating the risk of defunct technology. Once the libraries are configured the customer can select the migration feature to automatically copy all their existing data over to an industry standard UDF Blu-Ray library.
