BOTH Predicts Self-Employment to Outpace Job Creation

Back Of The House (BOTH USA) issues job market predictions.

Saint Petersburg, FL, January 11, 2010 --(PR.com)-- BOTH USA (www.bothpro.com) announced job market predictions for 2010. The predictions are based on the company’s interpretation of societal and economic mega trends, both nationally and internationally.

Founder and CEO Erik Vonk indicates, "At BOTH, we believe there are indications of a likely surge in self-employment, which we see as a positive trend. Flexible work arrangements reduce friction in the employment market and improve instances of a match in the supply and demand for skills. BOTH is focused on preparing and positioning our Clients on the forefront of this trend so they can capitalize on the income opportunities and the freedom of working for themselves, not by themselves."

According to Erik Vonk, the following developments will likely become evident during 2010 and into the foreseeable future:

Self-employment is predicted to increase during 2010. Historically, recessions have produced sustained increases in self-employment and flexible work arrangements. In 2010 this increase could be proportionally greater than after previous recessions as a significant portion of the record number of unemployed will likely find their way back into the workforce as self-employed.

Over-supply will continue to define most segments of the employment market. Even during recovery, the rate of conventional job creation is likely to continue at a relatively slow pace as companies remain cautious over the longer term and will increasingly turn to "on demand" work arrangements as a part of flexible cost strategies.

Pressure on remuneration caused by over-supply in the employment market and government intervention in executive pay scales will have a dampening affect on overall total compensation levels. As high unemployment lingers, this dampening will be exacerbated as professionals resort to income generation outside their core competencies.

Job mobility will further structurally increase, both geographically as well as functionally. Driving factors are an increase in the degree of functional specialization, an increase in flexible work arrangements, an increase in self-employment and a decrease in employer/ employee loyalty.

A shift in income generation will develop while employment market dynamics deal a final blow to any sense of "job security." The notion of "income security" will continue to gain strength. Increasingly, skilled individuals are feeling more secure about their ability to exchange their competencies for income "independently," outside of a conventional employment framework.

Functional specialization is gaining further in importance at the expense of "generalist" and (middle) management roles, as companies become leaner and more oriented towards flexible cost structures.

Increase in civil servants as a percentage of the total workforce, caused by an expanding government in an over-supplied employment market.

The demand for health and retirement benefits will favor individually underwritten plans. Complex and unclear healthcare reform will create uncertainties among employers about future obligations and seems to promote "collectivity" in a society that is looking for individuality and freedom. In addition, increases in the number of self-employed will further stimulate this demand.
