Ronald B. Kuppersmith, MD, FACS, a Physician on Staff at College Station Medical Center, Has Been Officially Recognized as Robotic Thyroid Surgeon
Ronald B. Kuppersmith, MD, FACS, has been officially recognized as a Robotic Thyroid Surgeon and is the first physician in North America hold this distinction. Today he successfully performed his 20th robotic thyroid surgery at the College Station Medical Center in College Station, Texas.
Robot-assisted or daVinci thyroid surgery allows Dr. Kuppersmith to remove the thyroid without any neck incisions, eliminating the traditional post-operative neck scars, while improved high definition three-dimensional visualization and more precise control of surgical instruments compared to standard or even “minimally invasive” techniques.
This innovative technique was pioneered in Korea by Woong Youn Chung, MD of Yonsei University College of Medicine and has demonstrated the potential to reduce the risk of damage to the laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands. Kuppersmith spent time in Korea studying the technique with Dr. Chung, and has been invited to speak about the technique at multiple national and international medical conferences. He also has been involved in the development of training protocols for the technique.
Dr. Kuppersmith is president of the The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and practices full-time in College Station, TX.
