Drawing Their Own Conclusions: the NewsCurrents Student Editorial Cartoon Contest

K-12 students are invited to enter a national student editorial cartoon contest sponsored by NewsCurrents, the weekly current events discussion program.

Madison, WI, January 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Every year, a very strange thing happens in classrooms all around the United States. Students of all ages are spending their time sketching, doodling, and drawing cartoons in the middle of their social studies classes — and their teachers are encouraging and helping them to do so. What is happening here?

These students are creating entries for one of the most interesting national competitions in the U.S.: the NewsCurrents Student Editorial Cartoon Contest.

This contest, now in its 21st year, is sponsored by NewsCurrents, the award-winning weekly current events discussion program for K-12 students. Winners in each of three age groups receive U.S. savings bonds as prizes.

“These cartoons prove that kids are capable of a keen understanding of complex issues," said Judith Laitman, president of Knowledge Unlimited, the company that publishes NewsCurrents.

"Just as importantly, the cartoons show how much young people care about a wide variety of serious issues, including the economy, global warming, health care, and the war on terror," Laitman said.

Students do not need to subscribe to the NewsCurrents program in order to enter the contest. This year’s deadline is March 2, 2010.

Knowledge Unlimited is an educational publishing company based in Madison, Wisconsin.

Rules and information for the contest are available at www.newscurrents.com, or by calling Knowledge Unlimited at 1-800-356-2303.
