She's Geeky Plans Unconference in Bay Area

Women who see themselves as geeks to gather January 29, 30 & 31, 2010.

Berkeley, CA, January 23, 2010 --(PR.com)-- She’s Geeky, the two-year-old concept born in Silicon Valley that gathers women of all tech interests and backgrounds, comes to The Bay Area for the third time on January 29, 30, and 31. She’s Geeky brings together women from a variety of tech organizations, businesses and not-for-profits to strengthen the burgeoning community of women in STEM fields.

The event takes place at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA. Supported by Corporate Sponsors O’Reilly, BlogHer, Palantir, Microsoft, Adobe, CivicActions, Spada Inc., and Community Sponsors: TechnoGirlTalk, MentorNet, SocialMedia, OxfordFederal, Sarah Dopp Consulting, and Perfect Word. Sponsorship opportunities for the Bay Area event are still available. The fee for attending is reasonable at $210 for three days, $140 for two days and $75 for a single day. Reduced rate opportunities are available.

She’s Geeky is an unConference in which the agenda is created by all participants, in real time, the day the event happens. This format supports peer to peer learning, dialogue about the issues that are top of mind and networking. In this women’s only environment attendees have the opportunity to see their contribution to their field in a new light and gain confidence to step forward in their lives and careers.

She’s Geeky attracts women from a broad spectrum of technological specialties, diverse social groups, generations, and levels of expertise. The inclusive quality of She’s Geeky events promotes discussion, furthers cooperation, and encourages learning. She’s Geeky advances systemic change in tech culture by disseminating effective practices to address the challenges of women working in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. National and Corporate sponsorships are available for upcoming gatherings in NYC, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Washington, DC – with up to 3 more events planned for 2010.

The first She's Geeky unConference was held in October 2007, at the Computer History Museum. Rather than creating yet another niche women-in-tech organization, the organizers decided to work with and promote existing leaders and organizations, inviting them to meet at an interactive event called an unConference. Approximately 200 women in a wide range of technology fields (computing, hardware, software, open source, entrepreneurship and media) attended. The extremely positive response created the demand for a similar event on the East Coast. The second She's Geeky was held in New York City at the Microsoft Corporate offices in early December, 2008, the third back in Silicon Valley and the fourth in Washington, DC held at NCLR, both in 2009.

She’s Geeky convenes to inspire women technologists for the future and advance systemic change, providing a space to create enduring communities that foster collaboration and innovation among women tech professionals. She’s Geeky is a project of Planetwork NGO, a California 501©3 non-profit educational organization, working at the intersection of IT and social/environmental good.
