LDRA and Netrino Partner to Offer a Static Analysis Tool That Enforces the Embedded C Coding Standard

LDRA has extended its extensive support of C programming standards by implementing Netrino’s Embedded C Coding Standard. Netrino, specialists in embedded software architecture and process, has developed the Embedded C Coding standard to minimize firmware bugs, improve maintainability, and ensure portability of embedded software.

Wirral, United Kingdom, April 16, 2010 --(PR.com)-- Partnership extends LDRA’s extensive support of C coding standards.

LDRA, the leading provider of automated software verification, source code analysis, and test tools, and Netrino, the leader in embedded software architecture and process consulting, are partnering to implement the Embedded C Coding Standard. Support for the Embedded C Coding standard complements the LDRA tool suite’s extensive support for C language programming standards such as MISRA-C:1998 and MISRA-C:2004, CERT C, SEC C and GJB (Chinese Military Standard).

The Embedded C Coding Standard was developed by Netrino to minimize firmware bugs by creating rules that keep bugs out while also improving the maintainability and portability of embedded software. The coding standard details guiding software programming principles, specifies naming conventions and outlines rules for data types, functions, preprocessor macros, variables and much more. Individual rules that have been demonstrated to reduce or eliminate certain types of bugs are highlighted.

“To be effective, coding standards must be enforceable,” commented Michael Barr, president of Netrino. “By having a coding standard integrated into a static analysis engine such as the LDRA tool suite, developers can automatically prevent bugs from creeping into the code rather than leaving bugs to be inadvertently created, identified and eradicated—a much more costly approach. LDRA’s long-standing integration with most embedded architectures, development tools and operating systems ensures that the LDRA tool suite is capable of addressing a broad range of developer needs.”

“From its beginnings, LDRA has been committed to superior programming standards,” noted Ian Hennell, LDRA Operations Director. “We share Netrino’s commitment to helping developers create code that is highly reliable, portable and bug free. We trust that this partnership will enable both LDRA and Netrino to extend the principles of quality software programming that can be easily maintained, certified and ported over time.”

The C language is widely used by organizations in the development of safety-critical software applications. The LDRA tool suite provides the most comprehensive C coding standards enforcement available on the market today. Support of the Netrino Embedded C Coding standard extends LDRA’s already comprehensive list of C/C++ language standards.

Implementation of this new standard will be demonstrated in the ESC tutorial “How to Prevent Firmware Bugs with Coding Standards” presented by Netrino President Michael Barr and LDRA FAE Nat Hillary. Those interested in learning practical coding rules to keep bugs out of embedded software and to automatically enforce good programming principles are welcome to attend the tutorial to be held on Monday, April 26 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Registration for the tutorial is managed through ESC registration.
